In today’s contemporary art world textiles are to be found in every area of painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. Artists make use of animal, plant and synthetic fibres in the form of untreated material, household textiles and items of clothing. An abundance of work with textiles and various techniques has been created: photographs that have been sewn over, drawings incorporating sewing, stitched assemblages, reinterpretations of everyday materials, fabric works that have been over-painted and sewn together or sculptures made from pieces of clothing. The immediate sensuous appeal of the materials used, forms the basis of these works. Furthermore, the traces of the production process and the time invested in many of these works are clearly visible. Sewing and working with material are generally recognised and understood to be part of the everyday working technique, Many of the works surprise the viewer in that they have been created with an almost manic amount of effort and with scant regard for any economical thought

A second level in the picture is often created, in which another material meshes into the background – interpreting, re-interpreting, expanding. Seams and threads are the uniting elements between the artistic disciplines and the different artistic approaches.
